How it Works
Pick out free reusable materials on our mandatory Materials Selection Day: Saturday, March 3rd from 9:00am–1:00pm. If you are unable to attend the Materials Selection Day, you may schedule a make-up selection time by appointment (March 5 – 7).
Selected reusable building materials found at BRING will be the majority of your product design project. Supporting materials may be used, but should only comprise a small percentage of the final creation. Supporting materials made of natural, renewable resources (wood, newspaper, cardboard, etc.) or common waste items (single-use plastics, scrap fabric, coffee cups, etc.) are strongly encouraged.
Designers have seven weeks from the Materials Selection Day to design and build their products. Deadline for product designs is Saturday, April 21.
Additional restrictions: This challenge is only for Lane County residents. Only completed designs on display at Metamorphose (Saturday, April 21) will be eligible for prizes. Only one prize per winning design will be awarded.
The majority of the environmental impact of our society’s consumption comes from manufacturing and using products. Through donations from individuals and businesses, BRING recovers about 500 tons of building materials from our community’s waste stream every year – material that would otherwise end up in the landfill. Reusing these materials helps conserve natural resources and the energy needed to extract, manufacture, and transport new stuff.
When we reduce our consumption of new stuff and reuse what we already have, we:
• protect nature
• preserve native ecosystems
• create jobs
• reduce air pollution, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions
We challenge designers to keep these facts in mind as you design products.
BRING is also hosting a Product Design Challenge for Lane County schools this spring! For more information, contact BRING’s Education Manager at firstname.lastname@example.org.
